Okay so, you may or may not have heard of something called TED Talks. TED is a non-profit organization dedicated to "Ideas Worth Spreading." It originally began in 1984 as a single conference bringing together people from technology, design, and entertainment. Today there are TED conferences all over, talking about all sorts of things.
Recently, I watched an interesting video about modern films, and their lack of female protagonists. Colin Stokes, tells stories about his kids watching Star Wars. He compares the almost entirely male casting of Star Wars to the Wizard of Oz, with a female protagonist and female antagonist. The talk is about how we look at man-hood, where our ideas of what a man should be come from, and how that is, or should be, changed.
